Best hotel view in Shanghai - Hyatt on the Bund
Located conveniently on the Bund in PuXi ( West side of the river) is the Hyatt on the Bund. This hotel opened in 2007 and is a little older than the Park Hyatt & the Grand Hyatt on the east side of the river.
Spectacular views * main selling point *
The main selling point for this hotel is the location and the views you get from the room. As it is located on a curvature from the Bund, you can see the entire strip of old and new Shanghai. The West side of the river is the old colonial buildings circa 1920s and some even older. The East side of the river (Pudong) is all new. Pudong used to be all farmlands when i left Shanghai in 1993, now it is home to one of the international financial hubs and mega skyscapers. No other city in the world shows such a stark contrast between the old and new. London is also beautiful where you can see St Paul’s cathedral next to new buildings. The juxtaposition of Pudong and Puxi in one view is striking. To the left is the new Pudong and the right, the historical buildings.
If you can check in earlier, ask for a higher floor room as you will be able to get a better view. I was staying with my bestie who is a Hyatt Diamond so we got very high floor. This is the spectacular view from the room.
The chaise chair right beside the window is extremely comfortable, one can melt into the view for hours and hours. The ambient light in the background with red lace has a nice asian touch to it.
Room
One thing that is weird about the room is the bathroom. It is open and connected to the room and can be divided via sliding doors. I guess the architect was trying to make the room feel bigger. I liked the separation of the toilet from the shower. The amenities are all June Jacob, have not heard about this brand before nor is it a local Shanghaiese brand.
The bedding is comfortable and i had no complaints.
Spa / Pool
I went to the spa at 6:30 when it opened. It has a beautiful pool and the mens and womens room each have their hot tubs and sauna, typical of most Grand Hyatts and up. The Yuan spa opens at 10 but the pool is earlier. I did not get a chance to take pictures this time but will do so next time i visit. The concept of the spa is about the balance of Yin and Yang, with circle pools.
Hyatt Bund Club
Hyatt Diamond(now Globalist) members can also have breakfast at the Hyatt Bund club. I did not have access to my camera when we went down but this blog has extensive pictures of the food. I thought the selection of hot and cold dishes for breakfast was superb. I had the best cold smoked salmon in China at the Bund club. The coffee was great as well. Many had to catch company shuttle bus in the morning and the waiters even served coffees and lattes in to go cups. Very thoughtful.
In fact, the Hyatt on the Bund got on Conde Nast’s 2017 golden list as a gourmet getaway hotel. I can see why.
Transportation
If you’re staying at this hotel, it may be hard to call a Taxi/Uber/Didi because many of the streets are one way and taxi drivers have a hard time getting into this area of the Bund. Since it was very close the British concession of Shanghai, these one way narrow lanes are very similar to London and can be a headache for Taxis. You may have a better chance if you walk a few blocks out.
